Plenary Lecture

Developing Research Initiatives in E-Health: Evaluating Usage of Online Environments for Healthcare as a Viable Resource among Greek Consumers

Prof. D. Halkia,
Hellenic American University
Athens, Greece

Abstract: The challenges of the online environment for healthcare have been considered before. There are uncounted online resources, amateur as well as professional, that overlap with formal Internet interventions. Beyond healthcare, there are many more innovations that draw on user-generated content and the Internet’s democratization of production and distribution. The ideal goal in e-health will perhaps be something that can successfully merge the democratized nature of MySpace with the safety critical nature of healthcare. Yet, in an EU nation such as Greece, with the low penetration of the Internet, the continued use of traditional delivery methods among medical personnel, the consumers trust in these traditional delivery methods and the public healthcare system’s trend of insufficient research and development in e-health initiatives, consumers continue to be suspicious of e-health as a viable online resource of patient support.

With more than 1 billion Internet users worldwide, the World Wide Web has inevitably made its mark on the global health care industry. As an EU nation, Greece has not conducted many e-health trends surveys due to the low penetration of the Internet and the continued belief among Greek consumers that the Internet cannot substitute for face-to-face contact with a physician. Yet, based on a 2004 study, 23.0% EU consumers use the Internet to get health-related information. In Greece, 13.5% of Internet users log on to access health-related information. Thus far, Greece has not conducted many e-health trends survey due to the low penetration of the Internet. E-health in Greece appears to be a consumer-based movement that has emerged in the past decade and is not the result of any planned action from the health care authorities. (Chronaki, et al, 2006).

This Plenary Lecture will present research initiatives developed and in process by a research team based at Hellenic American University in Athens, Greece to assess and evaluate: 1) Internet usage for health-related purposes among a representative sample of Greek consumers; 2) types of health care information sought by Greek consumers and motivation for doing so; 3) Greek consumers’ participation in e-health communities; and, 4) recommendations for objectives to initiate more research and technology development programs for e-health in Greece.
