Plenary Lecture

Carbon Capture at the Conversion of Fuels into Electrical Energy

Assistant Professor Heimo Walter
Institute for Energy Systems and Thermodynamics
Vienna University of Technology
Vienna, AUSTRIA
E-mail: heimo.walter@tuwien.ac.at

Abstract: The growing industry and world population results in an increased demand on energy and as a consequence of this energy consumption also in a increased emission of greenhouse gases. In view of the uncertainties related to global warming there is a demand to reduce CO2 emissions. A large part of the electrical energy used in industry and households are made available by power plants which converts the chemical energy stored in the primary energy carrier coal and gas into electricity. All these power plants can't be replaced in the next decades by plants which uses only renewables as energy source. Therefore a need is given to develop processes to reduce the CO2 emissions of power plants which uses the energy carrier coal and gas. One option to reduce the CO2 emissions is an increase of the efficiency of such power plants. This was done in the last decades and will be done also in the future. But this way is not sufficient enough. Thus, other options to reduce the CO2 emissions are currently under development namely pre- and post-combustion, oxy fuel-, chemical- and carbonate looping technology. The basic principles of these new technologies will be discussed. The advantages and disadvantages will be analyzed and finally a comparison of the different processes will be presented.

Brief Biography of the Speaker:
Heimo Walter is a mechanical engineer. He obtained the Master degree 1992 at the Vienna University of Technology. From 1994 to 2007 he was a University-Assistant at the institute for Thermodynamics and Energy Conversion at the Vienna University of Technology. 2001 PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. He is since Feb. 2007 assistent professor at the Institute for Energy Systems and Thermodynamics at the Vienna University of Technology. In Nov. 2007 he earned Dr. hab. degree with the thesis: “A contribution to the static and dynamic stability of natural circulation steam generators” at the Vienna University of Technology. He is author of about 60 papers published in international journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Walter’ primary research interests are in the area of fluid dynamics in chemical and power plants as well as on heat transfer and stability in two phase flow. Since 2006 Member of ASME-American Society of Mechanical Engineering and Member of WSEAS - World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society.
